Mental health care and cognitive recovery
The second path is where licensed professionals do their work. Trauma-focused talk therapies such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are the approaches the VA’s National Center for PTSD identifies as the ones that work best for post-traumatic stress. They are delivered by trained clinicians, in person or by secure video, and they are available through the VA, Vet Centers, nonprofit clinic networks and community providers.
Families belong on this path too. Many of the organizations below offer counseling for spouses and children, help a partner understand what their Veteran is working on in therapy, and provide a place for a caregiver to be the one who talks for a change. Global Recovery Inc does not provide this care ourselves. We help you find it.
What belongs on this path
- Licensed mental health providers offering evidence-based PTSD care to Veterans and family members.
- VA PTSD programs, from outpatient specialists at every VA medical center to residential programs for severe symptoms.
- Vet Centers, the VA’s free, community-based readjustment counseling centers that serve Veterans and their families.
- Free counseling networks that connect military families with volunteer licensed professionals at no cost.
How to take the first step
If the Veteran is enrolled in VA health care, start by asking their primary care provider for a PTSD referral. If they are not enrolled, or if you are a family member seeking care for yourself, the Vet Center call center and the nonprofit networks below can usually set up a first conversation within days. Bring a short list of what you have noticed at home; it helps the clinician and it helps you.
When the mind path has a clinician attached to it, the family is ready for the Relationships path.
